Dr. Barta: Welcome back to Reconnection Moments, a space where we get real about intimacy disorders and healing from sexual compulsivity. Not through willpower or shame, but by gently rewiring the brain and body back into connection. I'm Dr. Michael Barta, creator of the Reconnection Model. In each episode, I'll be answering questions I hear most from clients and therapists, and I will also be sharing fresh insights from my ongoing work.

Cory Miller: Welcome back to the Reconnection Podcast. I'm Cory Miller and I'm here with Dr. Michael Barta. Dr. Barta, you're making a major change in the literature around the Reconnection Model. Instead of just one book, you're developing three different books. Why are you doing that?

Dr. Barta: Well, I decided I was trying to make one book do three things and one book wasn't going to be able to cover what I wanted to say, right? And so the man whose sexual behavior has just blown up his life does not need the same book as the betrayed partner, right? Neither of them need the same book that a clinician would read that's trying to help them. They're dealing with the same problem, but they're dealing with it from different places.

Dr. Barta: So I developed what I'm calling a Reconnection series, more or less. Three books written for three different people. One is for the struggling, you know, the person struggling with the addiction. There's going to be another one specifically for the partner. And then the third one's going to be for the clinician. They're all connected by the Reconnection Model, but each answers a different question.

Dr. Barta: Let's start with the person who's struggling with the addiction, right? The first book is called Reconnection: Understanding and Healing from Sexual Addiction. This is probably the most personal of the three books I'm writing from two perspectives, right? I'm a clinician who spent years treating the problem, but I'm also a person who's recovering from it. So I see both sides of the same thing in my own personal life, right?

Dr. Barta: And I definitely know what it's like to ask, what is wrong with me? I know what it's like to sincerely want to stop and find myself going back to the behavior. And I know the shame. I know the secrecy. I know the promises that we make to ourselves, right? I know this personally.

Dr. Barta: And I know what it's also like to eventually discover that there was a lot more to what was happening underneath the sexual behaviors than I ever understood. And so I wanted to write this book in a way that I wish someone would have had written and handed me when I was trying to figure out what was happening to me, right? I wanted some information that's just not out there, right? It's just not there.

Dr. Barta: So I wanted something, or I wrote this as a way a man can sit down and understand, but more importantly, feel understood. I want him to recognize himself in these pages and start asking himself different questions instead of things like, only, you know, how do I stop?

Dr. Barta: I want him to start asking questions like, why did this become so powerful in my life, right? What was happening inside of me? But more importantly, what do I need to change? It's not about just stopping the behavior. It never has been.

Dr. Barta: So the book doesn't excuse behavior or minimize the damage it caused, because accountability matters. But shame doesn't explain why someone repeatedly returned to behaviors that we knew could cost us everything. And understanding that is where something begins to change.

Dr. Barta: And most importantly, I want the man reading this book to know something I wish I had understood a lot earlier, and that is absolutely you can heal.

Cory Miller: That's great. So the first book is really for the man in the addiction trying to find a way out. Your second book is actually a major change to the Reconnection book that's already out there, right?

Dr. Barta: Yes. So a lot of people, you know, maybe, I don't know, some people for sure are going to, you know, be able to look on Amazon and see the blue Reconnection book that's currently available, right? But I'm completely rewriting this book, right? And I'm turning that into a clinical guide to the Reconnection Model.

Dr. Barta: Clinicians need to have a different conversation, right? What we've been using and traditional approaches to sexual addiction have understandably placed a great deal of emphasis on behavior alone, right? Stopping the acting out, sobriety, boundary, triggers, accountability, and relapse prevention. You know, you get this little checklist that you check off every day. So they're saying the behavior has to stop. All of those things matter, right? But I don't believe that's the end of the clinical question.

Dr. Barta: I also want the clinician to start asking, why did this behavior become so powerful for this person sitting in front of me? What was it providing? What was happening underneath it? What happened to his ability to experience genuine intimacy?

Dr. Barta: How did his nervous system learn how to protect him, right? Instead of, you know, just saying, okay, now the behavior stopped, now what? And how did the sexual addiction or behavior become part of the process, you know, that led to this place that he could not get out of?

Dr. Barta: So the clinical book will help clinicians understand the model I built, the Reconnection Model, as a different framework for looking at intimacy disorders and compulsive sexual behaviors. And this isn't about choosing between stopping the behavior and understanding what drives it, because we can do both, right? We can establish behavioral safety and accountability while also understanding the person beneath it. That's the perspective that I do want to bring to the clinical conversation.

Cory Miller: Okay, that's the second book really for clinicians. And then there's the person who may have been devastated by all this, the betrayed partner.

Dr. Barta: Big time. Okay, because there's a lot of amazing books out there, right? And there's a lot of people in this field that are treating the betrayed partners. And every single one of them that I've seen are amazing, mind-blowing. I mean, some of the books I read, I mean, they give me insight, they give me understanding, all these things, right? I wanted to answer something a little differently. Because what comes up over and over and over again is the why, right?

Dr. Barta: And so the third book is going to be called Reconnection After Betrayal: Why He Did What He Did and What Comes Next. Because I believe that the partner deserves a book written directly to her experience. And after discovery, she's asking very different questions.

Dr. Barta: Was the relationship real? Why wasn't I enough? Why couldn't he come to me with his problems? How could he kept doing this, knowing how badly it would hurt me? And eventually, what happens now? Right? Where do we go?

Dr. Barta: And I don't want her having to read a book written for him, you know, what like my other books did, and somehow translate his recovery into her healing. Her experience deserves its own voice.

Dr. Barta: And I want to be very clear about this. When I'm saying understanding the why, I'm saying you can understand the why, understanding why he developed this problem, but it's never going to excuse what he did, right? So this isn't a book about forgiving him or her or forgiving them.

Dr. Barta: It's about, look, it's about understanding how this developed and how you got caught in the middle of this. Because you didn't cause any of it. His history, you know, when we're looking at what may have caused this, it doesn't erase the pain.

Dr. Barta: His addiction doesn't determine whether the partner should stay. And his recovery doesn't dictate what the partner's healing should look like. I want this book to help the partner understand what happened without making his behavior her responsibility.

Dr. Barta: And I do want the partner to understand that their healing matters independently of what he chooses to do.

Cory Miller: So all three books are connected, but they're really answering three different questions.

Dr. Barta: Yes, exactly. The man struggling from sex addiction is asking, why do I keep doing this? And can I change? You know, the betrayed partner is asking, why did this happen? And how do I heal from it? And the clinician is asking, what am I actually treating here? That's the reason for three books.

Dr. Barta: And underneath all three, something I've come to believe very deeply through my own recovery and through my own years of clinical work. So sexual behavior is where we can see the problem. But it doesn't tell us where the problem began. And if we only look at the behavior, we can miss the human being underneath it. And if we focus only on understanding him, we miss the very real human being who was drastically injured by what he did.

Dr. Barta: You know, so this series is my attempt to hold all these people together without confusing the three different experiences.

Cory Miller: So what do you hope happens when these books are finally out there?

Dr. Barta: Well, I hope different people pick them up and have the same fundamental experience. Someone finally understands what I'm going through, right? That's my goal.

Dr. Barta: I want the man drowning in shame to discover that accountability and hope can exist together. I want the betrayed partner whose world has been shattered to understand that behavior was not a measure of the partner's worth and that there's a path towards their own healing. And I want the clinician sitting across from either of them to become curious about whether we're looking deeply enough at what we're actually treating.

Dr. Barta: That's why I'm changing the literature around the, you know, the Reconnection Model. Not because I have three different messages, but because I'm speaking to three different people who each deserve to be spoken to directly. And over the coming months, I'm going to use this podcast to explore many of the ideas, right, behind these books and behind the Reconnection Model. I really want to start explaining what I believe happened beneath the sexual addiction, why connection matters so much, and what I believe has to become real for real recovery.

Dr. Barta: I'm not going to teach this, you know, I'm not going to teach the system itself, right? The process itself, but what the process gets to. But I do want to help people see this problem differently.

Dr. Barta: Sometimes the question that changes everything isn't simply, how do I make this behavior stop? It's, what happened that made this behavior so necessary in this person's life? And what needs to become possible so that they no longer need it? And that's the conversation that these books are meant to begin.
